Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department deputies and emergency personnel responded to a single-vehicle crash Wednesday at 3:16 p.m. on CR 1000W, north of CR 700S. Officers arrived and located a vehicle that had struck a metal fence post with the driver found going in and out of consciousness. Mentone EMS and Fire Department extracted the driver, identified as Tammy L. Mikel, 49, Mentone, from her vehicle in serious condition. Mikel was airlifted to Lutheran Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, suffering from head and internal injuries. Officers stated that Mikel was southbound on CR 1000W and, for an unknown reason, drove off the west side of the roadway, striking the metal post. The crash is still currently under investigation. KCSD was assisted by the Mentone Fire Department, Mentone EMS and the Indiana State Police.
