MENTONE – The Mentone Town Council took care of several items on its agenda during its short meeting Monday night. Clerk-Treasurer Barb Ross asked the board if it would be OK if she paid the town’s share of the senior center’s utilities in one lump sum next year instead of monthly payments. The payment will be $2,500. Tim Croy, council president, said that would be easier and made the motion to allow the payment. The motion was approved. Town Marshal Jim Eads requested to spend up to $1,200 for two new laptops to replace the ones the police department currently has, as they have starting and heating issues. The money should be available for them, Ross said. Eads said he will probably buy the new laptops at Staples. Eads’ request was approved, and then Croy asked Eads what he would do with the old ones. Councilwoman Shelley Krueger asked if the old laptops were workable. After Eads said they were nothing he wanted, Krueger said she could use them for kids to take apart and learn how they work. “I’ll get them wiped and to you,” Eads said. The council also agreed to renew a contract with Emans Engineering for 2015, per Utilities Superintendent Josh Shepherd’s request. The contract is the same as in previous years, he said. According to what the council approved at its December 2013 meeting, Emans Engineering will serve as the town’s contracted engineer. In return, Emans will receive $4,300 annually for up to 60 hours of work effective Jan. 1. Jill Gross, councilwoman, asked Shepherd if everything with the contract was still going as he wanted. He said it was. Shepherd then requested to make a change to the 2015 salary ordinance to increase the part-time park employee’s pay range from $7.25 to $10 an hour to $7.25 to $12 an hour. The council granted the request. Councilwoman Shelley Krueger requested the council have an executive meeting this month or January by the latest. It was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17. Shepherd also said leaf pickup ended a few weeks ago. If anyone has any leaves to get rid of at this point, he said they should bag or box them for regular trash pickup.
