Mentone man charged following heroin overdoseAfter allegedly overdosing on heroin, a Mentone man was arrested on drug charges.
Brady Lee Shepherd, 27, of 3373 S. Ind. 19, Mentone, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 5 p.m. Thursday for possession of a narcotic. His preliminary bond was set at $5,250.
Court documents filed July 10 list charges against Shepherd as possession of a narcotic drug, a level 6 felony; and possession of a syringe, a level 6 felony. The documents list Shepherd’s address as 3541 W. Hill Lake Road, Claypool.
At about 9:32 p.m. June 29, Kosciusko County Central Dispatch was called in reference to a drug overdose. Dispatch advised Mentone Police Department officer Sam Bohnke of the drug overdose and that CPR was in progress.
Bohnke was allowed entrance into the residence by a woman and led to the back bedroom, where Shepherd was on the floor, fading in and out of consciousness. While being led to the victim, the woman said she thought Shepherd overdosed. Bohnke administered a dose of Narcan to Shepherd in an attempt to counteract the overdose. Shepherd had a pulse and began to sweat a lot. EMS arrived and took over medical intervention.
As Bohnke was being led to Shepherd he walked past a bathroom, where he saw a hypodermic needle and syringe on the countertop next to a white cellular device. Bohnke also saw a cap to a hypodermic needle and a syringe lying on the bathroom floor near a prescription pill bottle.
Bohnke asked the woman, who lives at the residence with her boyfriend, for consent to search the residence. She said she did not care but her boyfriend would have to make that decision. She said Shepherd was just visiting and did not live at the residence.
The boyfriend said he didn’t trust police and thought they would plant evidence. He also said Shepherd was just visiting and did not live at the residence.
A search warrant was obtained for the residence. Bohnke searched the residence and found a syringe containing a brown liquid, Shepherd’s cellphone, a pill bottle containing two marijuana cigarettes; a plastic container of cellophane wrapper of methamphetamine weighing less than 1 gram in the man’s and woman’s bedroom; a lock box in the living room containing two smoking devices with residue, four straws, scales, grinder and multiple Dormin pills used for cutting heroin; along with cellphones.
