Mentone Hires Miller As New Street Chief

Posted

MENTONE - Darrel Miller was hired Monday as Mentone's full-time street superintendent.

Miller has worked for the town on a part-time basis for almost six years while driving a school bus for Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. He will begin his new position Nov. 1, or sooner if the school board will release him. His salary will be determined at an executive session Thursday.

Jeff Beasley asked the council what the town could do to help him start an industrial supply business within the corporation limits. He said he would be erecting a 10,000-square-foot building after he finalizes a land purchase. The business will create nine or 10 jobs.

Council member Tery Reed said they would consider a tax abatement and, once the exact location of the business is determined, the council could be more specific about the extent of help that can be offered.

In other business, the council:

• Announced Oct. 18 will be fall cleanup day. Refrigerators must have certification that freon has been removed. Items not accepted include oil-based paint containers, cardboard boxes, concrete products and limbs longer than 5 feet and more than 2 inches in diameter. For more information, call the clerk at 353-7198.

• Announced a person will be appointed to take Mike Casper's seat on the council at the Oct. 17 Republican caucus. Casper submitted his resignation at the September meeting.

• Announced that leaf pickup will begin Oct. 21 and run through November on an "as needed" basis. Residents should rake leaves to the curb, not into the street. Leaves will be picked up before that time if they are bagged and set out. Residents should call the clerk's office to arrange pickup.

The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 in the clerk's office.
