After being found to have infringed on a patent, Medtronic will have to pay less after a court's decision Monday.
The Associated Press reported Monday that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit of New York eliminated $77.2 million in damages against Medtronic that came from a patent infringement case with Depuy Spine.
The case revolved around the Vertex line of multiaxial screws that are no longer on the market.
In 2007, Medtronic was ordered to pay $226.3 million for violating the patent.
The federal circuit court also eliminated $10.5 million dollars in sanctions and attorneys' fees.
In an e-mail sent to the Times-Union this morning, Lorie Gawreluk, of Depuy said, "We're pleased that the Court Of Appeals upheld the patent and awarded us lost profits."
A call to the Medtronic location in Warsaw was not returned.
