Manchester Students to Collect Food for REACH

Posted
NORTH MANCHESTER – On Dec. 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m., students from Manchester Junior-Senior High School will canvass the towns of North Manchester as well as Servia, Liberty Mills, Laketon, Sandy Beach and Ijamsville for donations to the canned food drive for REACH.
Students will meet at the high school at 4:45 p.m. and go throughout the community to gather non-perishable food items. The students who are participating in this event will have bags with the volunteer spirit logo on the front of them.
Students will go door to door collecting non-perishable food items. If a person is busy or will not be able to make it to the door, they can leave their non-perishable food items on their porch with their porch light on, letting the students know they’re willing to donate. If students do not make it to a house by 7:30 p.m. and items need picked up, call the high school and someone will come and get it. The high school’s phone number is 260-982-2196.
If a porch light is not on, students will knock on the door because collecting the cans is important to them. For a number of years, the school district has participated in a canned food drive to help give a little more to the people in need.
This year, the senior class decided to go bigger than just the classroom. Their ambition is to raise as many food items from around the community as possible.
“It’s a great way to show people that we can all give a little more,” said Tiffany Griese, one of the students organizing the food drive.
There also will be drop-off locations for people in the surrounding communities. These locations include Manchester Police Department, Alco and Sweetwater Church. People can drop off their non-perishable food item at any of these locations or at the high school office.
Along with the food drive, the school also is doing an Angel Tree project, which consists of buying presents for children in need around the holidays, and sponsoring the “Can-nonball” Tournament to raise money and cans Dec. 12.
