Manchester Raises School Lunch Prices 5 Cents

Posted
NORTH MANCHESTER – The Manchester Community School Board  approved a five-cent increase in lunch prices during its meeting Tuesday.
The changes would impact both student and adult lunches.
“The USDA requires that we raise our lunch prices in order to match the reimbursement rate for the free lunch program,” said  Becky Landes, Manchester schools food service director.
When questioned by the board on what she would do with the extra revenue, Landes stated, “I’m planning on incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables into our lunches.” She also mentioned that the funds could help fix or replace broken equipment in the school cafeterias.
Landes also noted that the free summer lunch program is beginning June 4 and will run Monday through Friday each week until August 9. Lunches will not be served on July 4.
The school board also voted to approve construction of a large storage building to increase storage space for the district. The building will be on the north side of the high school near the sand volleyball court. Carver Construction will be responsible for the project at a cost of a little over $58,000.
In other business an exchange program between Manchester High School and Community High School of Bergstedt, Germany, was approved. This program will send five to 10 high school students to Bergstedt in October as part of a cultural learning experience. Students from Bergstedt would visit Manchester in March 2014.
The next Manchester Community School Board meeting will be on June 4 at 5:30 p.m.
