LEESBURG – The town of Leesburg was rocked today by a shooting at Katie’s Kwik Mart on Main Street slightly before 6 a.m.

Luselva Saavedra, 35, of 310 East St., Milford, was airlifted in critical condition to Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, after reportedly being shot by her ex-husband.

The ex-husband, Ruben Saavedra, also of Milford, took his own live minutes later, police said.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department received a call of shots fired at 5:39 a.m. Deputies responded to Katie’s Kwik Mart to find a woman shot. Police were told by witnesses a male subject had fled the scene.

KCSD deputies informed Warsaw Police Department officers that the male subject had  fled south on Ind. 15.

WPD Public Information Officer Kip Shuter said two officers took position at CRs 350N and 150W. At 5:43 a.m., a WPD officer positively identified a male subject heading south on CR 150W in a maroon-colored truck. He turned around and followed the subject to Ivy Tech and took cover until backup arrived.

A short time later, as officers approached the truck, they heard a gunshot and when they investigated further, found the male subject had shot himself with a .357 revolver.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Chad Hill said from what they have gathered, the woman ran into the Kwik Mart and frantically told the cashier that her ex-husband was following her. The cashier led the woman behind the secure counter in the store where she tried to hide.

Her ex-husband arrived and was unable to get behind the counter. He pulled a gun and fired over the counter, striking his ex-wife in the shoulder. He then fled.

Hill also said that it appeared that there was a domestic argument prior to the shooting, and that the man and woman were divorced.

The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office was informed of the incident and is also investigating.

Ivy Tech was closed until at least noon today due to the investigation.
