Parents were notified Monday about an incident Friday at Edgewood Middle School where an adult male attempted to take an unrelated student out of school.
On Friday afternoon, a 21-year-old man showed up at Edgewood claiming to be an older brother of one of Edgewood’s eighth-grade students. He stated he was there to take the student out for ice cream, according to a post from Edgewood Middle School Principal JoElla Hausselman on ParentSquare, which is messaging app for teachers and parents.
When office staff checked the student’s schedule, they also checked PowerSchool and the man’s name was not included in the student’s contact information. The student’s parent was called and it was determined the student didn’t have a brother and the parent didn’t know who the man was.
School staff then found out the student had met the man on TikTok the night before and agreed to meet him in person. The student was initially told the man was 18.
“Unfortunately, this student had given him enough information that he was able to find her school and attempt to remove her from the school. Our (school resource officer) was involved and this man was quickly escorted off school property and told to leave and not return. All other area SROs were informed,” stated the post.
According to Warsaw Police Department Capt. Brad Kellar, this is an active investigation and they have no comment at this time. However, he said they anticipate following up in the near future depending on the conclusion of the investigation.
