Magical Meadows Hosting Free, Inclusive Trunk-Or-Treat

Posted

Halloween is a time for costumes, candy, laughter and making memories. But for individuals with disabilities and their families, traditional Halloween activities aren't always accessible or welcoming. The Magical Meadows hopes to change that with a free, sensory-friendly Trunk-or-Treat event on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m.
The free event, held at The Magical Meadows, 3386 E. CR 525N, Warsaw, is designed especially for individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory or emotional challenges, along with their families and caregivers, according to a provided news release. Participants of all ages are welcome, including adults with disabilities who may have outgrown traditional trick-or-treating opportunities but still enjoy the excitement of Halloween.
"One of the things we recognize is that individuals with disabilities don't just stop enjoying the things they loved as children when they become adults," said Michael Kuhn, executive director of The Magical Meadows. "Unfortunately, as they get older, opportunities to participate in activities like trick-or-treating often become fewer and farther between. We want to create an environment where nobody has to worry about whether they're too old, whether they'll be accommodated or whether they'll fit in. If dressing up, getting some candy and having fun brings you joy, then you belong here."
The afternoon will feature decorated vehicles throughout the property handing out candy and Halloween treats. Organizers are encouraging participating vehicles to offer gluten-free and nut-free options whenever possible to help accommodate individuals with dietary restrictions.
In addition to trick-or-treating, The Magical Meadows will offer fall-themed family photo opportunities, including a decorated horse carriage surrounded by straw bales and seasonal decorations. Families and caregivers are encouraged to dress up, participate in the festivities and enjoy the afternoon alongside their loved ones.
The event is free to attend, and no registration is required. Group homes and disability service providers are also encouraged to bring participants, provided appropriate staffing and supervision are maintained.
The Magical Meadows is also seeking individuals, families, businesses, churches, civic organizations, clubs, first responders and other community members willing to decorate a vehicle and distribute treats during the event.
Participants can create elaborate Halloween-themed displays or simply decorate their vehicles and hand out candy. Those bringing vehicles are encouraged to provide approximately 500 to 1,000 pieces of candy or other treats, including allergy-friendly options when possible.
"We would love to see our community come together to make this a really special afternoon," Kuhn said. "You don't have to do anything extravagant. Just showing up, handing out candy and helping someone experience the joy of Halloween can make a tremendous difference. We want our participants and their families to feel celebrated, welcomed and included, and our community has an opportunity to help us make that happen."
Anyone interested in decorating a vehicle and distributing treats can text Tammy Stackhouse at 574-265-3085 or Michael Kuhn at 574-377-1946. Advance notice is appreciated but not required, and community members are welcome to arrive the day of the event to participate.
For The Magical Meadows, the event reflects a broader commitment to creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families to experience joy, connection and a sense of belonging.
"Families of individuals with disabilities often have to think about things that many of us take for granted," Kuhn added. "Is this place accessible? Will my loved one be overwhelmed? Will people understand their needs? Will they be accepted? Our hope is that when families come to The Magical Meadows, they don't have to ask those questions. We want them to know that this is a place where they are welcomed exactly as they are."
