J&J Roofing Co. founders Johnny Wadkins and John Miller say they saw a need for a good roofing company in the area. They’re no strangers to construction, having worked in the field much of their lives. They’re also far from strangers to each other, having grown up as best friends since they lived along the same river in the fifth grade. “It was a natural thing for us to start a roofing business together,” said Wadkins, noting they went from summers as river rats to serving in the military together and working side by side on everything from pig farming to trimming trees and tearing down barns. Wadkins also owns Quality Pro Home Repair, while Miller most recently worked at Keystone RV in Goshen. “We thought there was room for a professional roofing company, and with our backgrounds we thought we could do this,” Wadkins said. “Our focus is quality work and service, and we stand behind what we say because we want to be a trustworthy company.” The Bourbon-based roofing business they started together serves customers in the Warsaw, Plymouth and Rochester areas. Wadkins handles sales and marketing while Miller oversees the crews on the ground as chief of operations. They use their own workers rather than subcontractors, which Wadkins said gives them more control over the quality of the work. Besides doing a job right the first time, both remarked that leaving a clean site behind is important to them. “We pride ourselves in leaving a clean site,” Wadkins said. “I’ve seen the mess others leave behind, and it leaves a sour taste in the homeowner’s mouth.” “We let the work speak for itself,” Miller added.
