County 5th- and 6th-grade students showed off their smarts recently during the annual DARE Quiz Bowl. The recently renamed Terry Polston Memorial Drug & Alcohol Quiz Bowl featured 12 6th-grade competitors and 12 5th-graders during the April 30 meet, with Sarah Meade of Washington Elementary School prevailing in the 5th grade and Karrissa Meyers of Sacred Heart winning the 6th grade. Nate Meyer of Harrison Elementary School was the 5th grade runner-up and Braydon Sammons of Eisenhower Elementary School was runner-up in the 6th grade. Meyers has since gone on to win the regional Quiz Bowl in Fort Wayne. The Bowl, sponsored by the Kosciusko Coalition on Drug Education, welcomes 5th and 6th grade students from all schools in Kosciusko County to compete in an academic competition. It is named in memory of long-time D.A.R.E. officer Terry Polston, who died of cancer.
