Local storm surprises residents; flooding no problem just yet

A brief thunderstorm passing through Kosciusko county last night surprised some people.

Rain, lightning and thunder even woke local residents to an unusual winter thunderstorm.

"It's rare for this time of year," said meteorologist Jeff Logsdon, Northern Indiana National Weather Service, North Webster. "It's very unusual."

Logsdon said the average rainfall last night was between 1/2- and 3/4-inch. Fort Wayne received 4/10-inch from the whole storm and South Bend received 1/2-inch. He said even with the snow melting and the rainfall, there was not a chance of local flooding.

"Right now, flooding is not a terrible concern. We were well below our flood guidelines going into the storm last night," he said.

Ponds were left in some areas locally, he said, but overall, there was no real concern about flooding.

In western Tennessee, several tornadoes touched down during a storm that took the lives of at least eight people. Logsdon said such storms were possible in southern states but not likely in Indiana.

"It's very unlikely to happen up here at this time of the year," he said. "It's not uncommon in the South."

Today's forecast calls for a steady temperature between 30 to 35 degrees. Scattered snowstorms are possible, with no accumulation, he said.

Tuesday is expected to be dry with rain mixed with snow on Wednesday and Friday.
