PLAINFIELD - Three local officers are among the graduating class Friday at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at Plainfield.

Deputies Kevin Gelbaugh and Jon T. Tyler of the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, and Ptl. Scott L. Hand of the Syracuse Police Department will graduate from the basic training course.

Speakers for the ceremony include Grant County Sheriff Oatess E. Archey, ILEA executive director Charles C. Burch and class president Jack C. Fetrow, director of public safety with the North Manchester Police Department.

During the 12-week course, officers receive training in firearms, emergency vehicle operation, criminal and traffic law, defensive tactics and other police-related topics.

All nonelected law enforcement officers are required to complete this course within their first year of employment by a department. There is no cost to the department for this training; funds are acquired through traffic fines and court costs paid by people convicted of criminal offenses.
