A victim of the Greyhound bus crash Wednesday near Manchester, Tenn., has been identified as a Pierceton man.
Matthew D. Hawkins, 29, of 1916 N. CR 850E, was killed in the crash, according to Dana Keaton of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Keaton said Hawkins had been positively identified. No further information was available.
Funeral homes in the county had received no word of the death.
Carly Rinearson, 19, of Fort Wayne, was injured in the crash.
Hawkins was one of six people killed when a Croatian immigrant slashed the neck of the bus driver, Garfield Sands, age 53, and then grabbed the wheel, causing the bus to overturn.
The FBI identified the assailant as Damir Igric, 29, who entered the United States in Miami in March 1999 with one month left on his visa. He boarded the bus in Chicago.
Croatia's interior ministry said Friday that the attacker's fingerprints matched Igric's, ending speculation from his family that his passport may have been stolen.
Igric, a locksmith, fought in Croatia's 1991 war for independence. Croatia's leading daily newspaper, Vecernji list, reported that Igric, like thousands of Croatia's ex-fighters, suffered from the post-traumatic stress disorder.
His neighbors described him as a 'nice guy' who wanted to be a sailor. His family said he had been working on cruise ships abroad for the last five years, and that they last heard from him several weeks ago.
Bruce Levy, the state medical examiner in Nashville, said autopsies Thursday showed the six dead passengers likely died instantly on impact. He said toxicology reports on Igric were not ready.
The crash happened just after 4 a.m. on Interstate 24 near Manchester, 60 miles southeast of Nashville. The bus, which originated in Chicago, was headed for Orlando, Fla. At the time, most of those aboard were asleep.
During his news conference, Sands declined to talk about the attack, saying Greyhound would allow him to say more later.
'They want me to hold my comments for a while,' he said.
Greyhound spokeswoman Kristen Parsley called Sands and relief driver Lawrence Payton 'absolute heroes' and said the company would reward them in some way.
