Local Letter Carriers Work With Agencies To 'Stamp Out Hunger'

Posted

Saturday is "Stamp Out Hunger Day."

The National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service, will be collecting nonperishable food items to help families in need in the community. The food the letter carriers pick up will be given to Combined Community Services, the Salvation Army and Our Father's House.

Last year, approximately five tons of nonperishable goods were picked up. This year's goal is six tons. Hampers also will be at the post offices for goods to be dropped off. Along with the Warsaw Post Office, the post offices in Claypool and Silver Lake are also participating.

"Stamp Out Hunger Day" is cosponsored by Campbell's, Priority Mail, U.S. Postal Service, United Way, AFL-CIO and Saturn.

Last year, across the nation, more than 58 million pouns of nonperishable goods were gathered by the letter carriers.

Letter carriers will accept any nonperishable item, but no glass. Canned or dry goods are acceptable as are boxes of cereal, toilet paper - even boxes of diapers have been donated in the past.
