Local Legion Offers Special Remembrance For POWs, MIAs

Remembering the sacrifices of our servicemen who have given their lives for freedom is appropriate this weekend.

Members of Warsaw American Legion Post 49 have also dedicated a shrine to those who are gone but whose fate isn't as definitively known - American prisoners of war and those missing in action.

The simple display consists of a single place setting on a small table, symbolizing the frailty of being a prisoner, alone against his or her suppressors.

The tablecloth is white, symbolic of the purity of their intention to respond to their country's call to arms.

The single rose in the vase signifies the blood they may have shed in sacrifice to ensure the freedom of the United States of America. The rose also reminds all that the family and friends of the missing comrade are keeping the faith while awaiting their loved one's return.

The red ribbon on the vase represents the red ribbon worn on the lapels of the thousands who demand, with unyielding determination, a proper accounting of the comrades not with us.

A slice of lemon on the plate reminds all of their bitter fate and the salt sprinkled on the plate represents the fallen tears of their families while they wait.

The glass is inverted - because the missing cannot toast. The chair is empty because they are not there.

The candle is reminiscent of the light of hope which lives in our hearts to illuminate their way home, away from their captors, to the arms of a grateful nation.
