Local Gun Club Hosts Sanctioned Skeet Shoot

Skeet shooters from Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio will make their way to Kosko Conservation Inc. of Warsaw later this month for the annual "Tippecanoe and Targets Too!" registered skeet shooting tournament.

Held Aug. 27, 28 and 29, the event is a National Skeet Shooting Association and Indiana Skeet Shooting Association sanctioned event.

Registration begins at noon Aug. 27. At least 50 competitors are expected.

Jim Gast, Kosko Conservation Inc. secretary, said, "It's a clay target sport shoot with shotguns, using four gauges of shotguns -Ê12-gauge, 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410 bore. Competition will include open division champions in four gauges, doubles and high overall. In addition, there will be class championships in five classes with concurrent competition among women and college-age and junior shooters.

"This is the warm-up shoot for the Indiana state championship held in September," Gast said. "It's a pretty well-attended shoot."

Skeet shooting was brought to the United States from Sweden. The word is derived from a Swedish word meaning, "to shoot." It simulates bird hunting more than any other shooting sport, Gast said.

Kosko Conservation Inc., on Fox Farm Road, west of Warsaw, has held registered target shooting for 11 years. Their skeet fields were rebuilt in 1998 with a federal grant from the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

"Visitors are welcome to attend the shoot," Gast said. Winners will be announced between 5 and 6 p.m. Aug. 29.

Sponsors of the event include Nelson Beverage, Warsaw Super Wash and Fiedeke Manufacturing, Goshen.

Gast said, "There's a lot of gals, a lot of kids out here. It's a good family sport."
