"Let Freedom Ring" is this year's theme for the 15th annual program to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The emphasis Monday will be on Harriet Tubman, conductor of the Underground Railroad, and on Kosciusko County's participation in the Underground Railroad.

According to Joseph Banks, chairman of the Committee to Commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Inc., eight drama students from Warsaw Community High School will present a drama on Tubman's life. The drama will be narrated by Dr. Frank Beard, pastor of Walnut Creek United Methodist Church.

Besides the student production, the program will feature a dialogue with Marsha Cook and Dana McAfee on Tubman, and various members of the community will read a tribute to the victims of Sept. 11.

"We want to emphasize the community values of freedom, of culture," Banks said.

The 90-minute program also will include the presentation of academic excellence awards to area students.

As with every year, the purpose of the program is "to provide an annual forum for Kosciusko County to commemorate the birth date and accomplishments" of King; "to celebrate the positive forward strides and community impacts which have been made by Kosciusko County minorities in business, church, education and government"; and to continue to seek opportunities to promote diversity in the county.

The event, which includes lunch, will take place Monday at Rodeheaver Auditorium, Winona Lake, from 11:30 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. It is free, but contributions are welcomed.
