FORT WAYNE – Local band Fair Fjola won the Whatzup and Wooden Nickel ninth annual Battle of the Bands Thursday night at Columbia Street West in Fort Wayne.
With their victory, the six-member group won a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, $1,500 in cash, one full-day recording studio time, 250 CDs in jewel cases with two-panel inserts and tray cards and advertising credit. Total value of the prize package is estimated at $15,700.
“They did a really nice job,” said Keith Reinholt, father of lead guitarist Tyler Reinholt, this morning. “All the bands did a really nice job.”
He said Fair Fjola brought out the most fans of any of the four bands in the finals of the competition. They also were able to book more shows last night.
The last band in the finals didn’t go on stage until about 11:30 p.m. Keith Reinholt said it took awhile for the winners to be announced as scores had to be tabulated.
Along with Tyler Reinholt, members of Fair Fjola include Sebastian Coria, Veronica Coria, Samy Coria, Sam and Eileen Gillis.
Competing against Fair Fjola were bands Valhalla, Slow Pokes and Big Money & the Spare Change.
Judges had four categories to score each band on, while a percentage of the final scores came from the crowd vote. The four categories for the judges were technical, song quality, originality and showmanship.
In technical, Fair Fjola scored a 90, second to Valhalla’s 98. For song quality, Fair Fjola was first with a 98, and also scored a first in originality with a 92. Fair Fjola received a 97 for showmanship, just one point short of Valhalla’s 98.
Total judges’ percentages were 94.25 percent for Fair Fjola, 93.50 for Valhalla, 87.25 for Slow Pokes and 84 for Big Money & the Spare Change.
