Local Animal Shelter Seeks To Help Elkhart County

Posted
Elkhart County Humane Society’s employees last weekend discovered three-quarters of their dog food had been destroyed due to a leaking roof.
The humane society has  received dog food donations since the flooding, but is in need of cat food donations.
Kosciusko County Animal Welfare League is seeking support from the community to donate dry Purina Cat Chow to the humane society.
Darla McCammon, Kosciusko County Animal Welfare League executive director, saw on the news Wednesday morning that the humane society was in need of cat food after she heard about the roof leaking at the humane society.
“I know how it would impact us to lose all of our food for our dogs and cats, and we want to help the humane society,” McCammon said.
McCammon came up with the idea for the AWL to collect cat food that she will deliver to the humane society in the AWL’s van Friday.
Rachel Dennis, assistant director of Elkhart County Humane Society, said the humane society does not currently need dog food, but needs Purina Cat Chow donations.
“We had to throw away a dumpster full of dog food that had been damaged from the water from the leaking roof,” Dennis said.
Dennis said that was 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of dog food, but as of Wednesday morning the humane society had 10,000 pounds of dog food that had been donated.
People who would like to donate cat food can do so by dropping it off today at the AWL, 3489 E. CR 100S, Warsaw, behind TSC, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
