Lincoln Elementary Students celebrated National School Lunch Week this past week. Tasha Short, Lincoln Elementary cafeteria manager, said the week helps promote the school’s healthy lunches. The school also celebrated National Breakfast Week in the spring. This past week, students participated in coloring contests, brought parents to lunch and Friday was celebrity lunch day. Celebrities included the school’s mascot, Lincoln Lion; Tracy Furnivall, Baker Youth Club executive director; Duane Herendeen, Warsaw Community Public Library children’s department supervisor; Kent Phelps, Lincoln physical education teacher; and Brandon Reinholt, senior at Warsaw Community High School and defensive end and linebacker for the football team. “The celebrities mingled with the students and got them excited about eating healthy school lunches,” Short said. She said students are provided healthy lunch options every day. Furnivall said he was glad to participate in the lunch week. “It’s important the students see me outside the Baker Youth Club, and I think it’s neat to see the students,” Furnivall said. “The school system does a great job of trying to keep the kids healthy so they are at school and their brains are sharp and they can get the education that is needed.” Herendeen also was happy to participate. “I really enjoy the friendships I have made at the library with the families and kids, and it’s fun that I’m visiting them in their world. They usually come visit me in my world,” he said. Phelps said it is important for the students to eat healthy. “Being a physical education teacher, I want them to lead healthy lives and we talk about the importance of exercise and eating right during class,” Phelps said. Reinholt said as an athlete he has learned the importance of eating healthy. “Nutrition is very important as an athlete. If they learn how to eat healthy when they are young, it will help them when they grow up,” Reinholt said.
