'Light The Night' Walk In Winona A Cancer Fundraiser

Posted
WINONA LAKE - Those who participate in this year's annual "Light The Night" Walk in Winona Lake will help raise funds for people with blood cancers.

The walk will be Sept. 20 in Winona Lake. A ceremony will be held at Rodeheaver Auditorium at 7 p.m., and the walk around Winona Lake begins at 7:25 p.m.

Participants are needed for this year's walk.

There are 36 teams currently registered for this year's walk, and the goal is to have 42 registered before the walk, according to walk chairman Ben Woodcox.

"Light the Night" is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's fundraising walk to raise funds for blood cancers. The society's goal is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.

More than 1,000 supporters participated in last year's walk and raised $62,000. The funds raised during the event benefit blood cancer research done locally.

Those who raise at least $25 get a balloon for the walk. Those raising at least $100 earn a t-shirt, and those who raise $200 earn a sweatshirt.

This year's walk honoree is Warsaw resident Jason Slone, who will share his story during the ceremony about battling Hodgkin's disease. Slone and his family will lead this year's walk.

Participants will walk along the route carrying lighted balloons, white for survivors and red for supporters.

Beverages and food will be provided free to participants by local sponsors during the event.

Teams or individual walkers can register online at www.lightthenight.org/in or by e-mailing or calling the local chapter at kathy.burner@lls.org or call 877-422-8389.

People also may register the night of the walk. Registration will be from 5 to 7 p.m.

People with questions may call Woodcox at 574-268-1276, Ext. 2906.
