Library Saves Money On Property Insurance

The Warsaw Community Public Library board of trustees heard good news Monday: The library can actually experience a reduction in insurance costs for the next three years.

Larry McSpadden presented two proposals at the monthly meeting, one from Cincinnati Insurance for $21,500 per year for three years, which was selected, and a one-year contract from Chubb Insurance for $25,454.

McSpadden said he has seen property insurance estimates increase 30 to 40 percent recently. Last year the library board paid $32,000 for insurance to Utica Insurance Co.

Employees will receive a bonus week's worth of pay as they have in the past.

Staff wages and salaries also were established for 2003, increasing by an average 6.7 percent. The library director and business manager will receive a 4.5 percent raise, with Zydek earning $56,361 and Renee Sweeny earning $36,430. Joni Brookins, assistant director, will receive a 4.3 percent raise to $47,858; and librarian Dana Owen will receive a 4.25 percent raise, to $40,744.

Other employees will receive increases from 4 to 1.88 percent, establishing the 2003 salaries and wages total at $862,109.

The library could reach a circulation record of 500,000 if its 19,621 borrowers each check out two items in December. Circulation records indicate 486,319 items were checked out by the end of November. Signs showing circulation numbers will be posted by the circulation desk throughout the month.

Public relations associate JoAnn Byers advised the board the staff will give books to the Headstart program's children for Christmas gifts again this year. She asked the board to contribute to the 75 to 100 books donated each year.

WCPL library board of trustees are: Larry Chamberlain, Joel Curry, Mark Morrison, Paulette Sauders and John Yingling. Ruth Jones and Anthony Etienne were absent.
