You probably don't know Greg Fean.
But Carrie Brissette, Leesburg, is asking you to help her help him and others like him.
Fean, 8, was diagnosed with acute lymphocyctic leukemia Sept. 18, 2001. Since then, he has undergone a substantial amount of chemotherapy. His last round of chemo will be Dec. 24.
On May 8 this year, Brissette is running a half marathon in Indianapolis known as the Life 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. A half marathon is 13.1 miles.
"Having run a full marathon this past year, I look forward to challenging myself with a speedy half marathon," Brissette said. "But I'm not running simply to improve my running time - I am running to help a newfound friend - 8-year-old Greg Fean."
Brissette is looking for others to help her raise money for leukemia research.
Her goal is to raise a minimum of $2,000, which will stay in Indiana. Leukemia researchers can be found at Purdue, Notre Dame and Indiana universities. Indiana has many leukemia patients receiving treatment who benefit from the funds donated to the Leukemia Society.
Donations are tax deductible and checks may be made payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and mailed to: Carrie Brissette, 30 EMS T31 Lane, Leesburg, IN 46538. For more information, call 574-453-3387 or 574-527-0642.
In 1960, leukemia's survival rate was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate is more than 76 percent, even considering that each week there are 1,900 new leukemia-related cancer cases in this country. Leukemia, according to information provided by Brissette, is the No. 1 killing disease of children, and yet affects 10 times as many adults. The cause remains unknown.
