Leesburg To Hold Town Clean Up Day

Posted
LEESBURG - Leesburg will have a town clean-up day this year, though it will not coincide with spring cleaning.
The Leesburg Town Council set the town clean-up day for July 16. This comes one week after the town garage sale day and will give residents a chance to get rid of any unwanted items leftover from the garage sales.
The board approved a bid from Waste Management Inc. for two 40-yard dumpsters. A list of items that may not be dumped will be made available prior to the clean-up.
In other business:
– The board emphasized that an abandoned vehicle ordinance and a weed and refuse ordinance will be enforced.
The abandoned vehicle ordinance mandates that vehicles that are not operable may not be parked outside where they can be seen, unless the vehicle is in the care of a repair business. Car repair businesses have 45 days to move cars out of sight or to get them running again.
The board also reminded residents that the maximum grass length is 12 inches, and refuse may not be stored in yards. The town has the authority to hire someone to cut grass or remove refuse and send the bill to the owner of the property. In the case that someone refuses to pay a bill, a lean will be placed against the property.
– Street Commissioner Brandon Queen reported that he has filled most of the major potholes in town. He is still working on reconstructing some areas where simple filling is not sufficient.
Queen also has finished painting the parking lanes downtown, replaced some old street signs that had faded, and returned the remaining salt and sand for snow removal for credit.
Queen reminded residents not to mow grass clippings into the streets.
“The town looks beautiful when the streets are clean and free of debris,” Queen said.
“Your efforts are appreciated and noted,” board president Tom Moore said.
– The board approved a purchasing policy ordinance. The State of Indiana requires that each town has a purchasing policy in place. The new ordinance brings the town into compliance with state standards.
– Leesburg resident Robin Williamson received signatures from all of her neighbors regarding a small deer processing business she intends to open at her residence.
Last month the board requested that Williamson bring more information and signatures showing that her neighbors do not have a problem with the business. Williamson came to last night’s meeting prepared with all necessary information.
“Go ahead. We have no authority to tell you ‘no’,” president Tom Moore said. “Be aware that this will come with its problems.”
“Everything does,” Williamson said.
– The annual United Way Day of Caring will be Aug. 17. Applications are available at the clerk-treasurer’s office.
The one-day event promotes volunteerism in the community and provides an opportunity to make a positive impact.
The next meeting of the Leesburg Town Council will be June 13 at 6:30 p.m.
