LEESBURG – Leesburg Town Council approved the purchase of a water attachment for the city-owned street sweeping equipment in order to combat dust that is produced as the streets are cleaned. The decision was made during last week’s town council meeting. Councilman Tom Moore said the water attachment is the most cost-effective solution to the problem, costing the town around $2,000. Moore said small towns, like Leesburg, often use a street sweeping attachment mounted on a Bobcat rather than a larger street sweeping unit utilized by larger towns with larger budgets. The water attachment is much more affordable than purchasing an entirely new unit, which could cost nearly $100,000. The attachment will mist the streets as they are being swept, cutting down on debris and dust that is produced in the process. “We clean and sweep the streets once a week,” Moore said. “The penalty is the dust. (The water attachment) is a way to help remedy the problem.” Though the attachment has already been ordered, Moore said the town won’t get much use of it the remainder of the year. “Leaf pick up is the primary concern this time of year,” he said. Moore also mentioned that many small towns use this particular attachment and he foresees it will remedy the spread of dust from the sweeping process, especially on windy days.
