Leesburg School To Get New Parking Area

Posted

Leesburg Elementary is on its way to getting an expanded parking lot after Monday's Warsaw school board meeting.

The board Monday gave Greg Schroeder, Warsaw Community Schools' director of buildings and grounds, permission to advertise for bids to create a parking lot. The new lot would be built on the former site of the Leesburg United Methodist Church, which burned down in 1997.

The bid also will include repairs to the existing parking lot, Schroeder said.

The board purchased the former church lot in part to ease the traffic situation around Leesburg Elementary, superintendent Dr. Lee Harman said.

"Part of this was to try to improve the traffic flow, so I think there's potential for improvement there," he said.

Schroeder said he expects the bids to be approximately "in the $50,000 area."

Harman also announced that school board candidate forums are being conducted in northern Indiana for people who want to be school board candidates.

Warsaw school board has three seats up for election next fall: District 3, now held by Dan Robinson; District 4, now represented by Charles Sauders; and District 6, held by Craig Allebach.

The forums are sponsored by the Indiana School Board Association, Harman said. Interested potential candidates may pick up information on the forums at the WCS administration building.

In other business, the board:

• Heard a report from Lincoln Elementary on the school's annual fifth-grade field trip to the Challenger Learning Center. The center simulates a space trip, said Lincoln principal Laura Ramsey, with students taking turns manning a spacecraft and mission control. The experience integrates science into other curriculum, she said, such as communications and math.

• Heard a report from Harman that total school enrollment is slightly higher at this time last year. Current enrollment is 6,323 students.

The members of the Warsaw school board are: Craig Allebach, Brad Brail, Larry Chamberlain, Cathy Folk, Dan Robinson, Charles Sauders and Roy Szymanski.
