Leesburg Town Council member Larry Richey was elected council president at Monday night’s meeting, replacing Doug Jones. Jones had completed a one-year term as president but will continue to serve the town as a member. Member Tom Moore will now serve as vice president. In old business Monday, council announced a settlement agreement has been reached between Midwest Trenchless Technologies Inc., and the Town of Leesburg. Moore said that in 2009, when Midwest Trenchless was installing the town’s sewer system, the incorrect electrical wire was used. Though the wiring had not caused the town any problems with the system, he said over time, the incorrect wiring would have led to sewage issues. While Midwest worked to replace the incorrect wire, the Town of Leesburg was holding a financial retainer as a part of the settlement agreement, though Moore said the company finished correcting the problem last summer. The agreement has now been signed by both parties and the board moved to approve it Monday night. Midwest Trenchless has since received the balance of the payment and the issue has been resolved. The board also issued a reminder to residents in rental units who need or desire a refuse container that they can call the Leesburg clerk-treasurer at 574-453-3315 to issue their request and one will be provided to them. A letter of reminder will be placed throughout the town and with rental property owners. In public information during Monday’s meeting, residents who desire a Knox-Box rapid entry system – a small storage box outside the home containing a master key to the residence – can also issue a request through the Leesburg Fire Department at 574-453-3238. These units are only accessible by the Fire Department and will allow emergency personnel to access the home in emergency situations without damaging locks, doors or windows. The next council meeting will be Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Leesburg Town Hall.
