Leesburg, Harrison Planning Annual Food-A-Thon Family Fun NightTonight, Leesburg and Harrison elementary schools once again are coming together for the Fifth Annual Food-A-Thon Family Fun Night.
All non-perishable food items collected during the event go to Combined Community Services.
Instead of basketball this year, the schools will take on each other in volleyball.
Leesburg Principal Randy Dahms said the doors open at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Middle School.
"Lakeview has been generous to let us use their facilities again," Dahms said.
The first volleyball game starts at 7 p.m. For the first game, it will be very competitive, Dahms said. Harrison Principal Randy Polston and Dahms will officiate the first game.
Fifth- and sixth-graders from both schools will participate in a game.
"We're just hoping for a fun night for everyone," said Dahms.
Cost to enter is two canned food items. For every two items a person brings in, they get one raffle ticket.
"All the proceeds goes to CCS, who feeds people in our county who are hungry. It's neat to see how our community wraps their arms around this to help the community," Dahms said.
During the 90-minute event, many different prizes will be raffled off. One of the top raffle prizes is two tickets to see Justin Bieber in concert, provided by Lake City Radio.
Nicole Wills, Food-A-Thon volleyball game organizer, said Walmart has provided a new Nano iPod Touch and a $50 iTunes gift card. Some of the other area businesses providing raffling prizes include Deb Collier's School of Dance, Hacienda, American Table, Richard's Restaurant, Papa John's and many others. The Pacers provided attendees the chance to win two tickets for five different basketball games.
"We tried to focus on kids and what they would like," Dahms said.
Another prize, Wills said, is a $45 family bowling package from North Side Lanes. The package includes pop, pizza, shoes and bowling for a couple of hours.
"Just lots of prizes from the local community, big and small," she said.
In the past, the Colts cheerleaders attended the event. This year, the Warsaw boys and girls varsity basketball teams and varsity cheerleaders will be on hand.
Dahms said for kids who grow up in the area, the varsity teams are really idolized by the younger kids. During tonight's event, parents will be able to take pictures of their kids with the varsity team, or kids can get the basketball players' autographs. There is no charge for them.
Wills said the goal is to collect at least 3,000 pounds of food.
"I'm just so appreciative of the Warsaw community in general, the radio stations, the businesses, the high school basketball teams and the staff that gave up their time to do this," Dahms said.
