Leesburg Council OKs Rewording Housing Law

Posted
LEESBURG – Leesburg Town Council amended the unsafe housing ordinance, heard from department heads and found out that Environmental One is fixing the sewer pumps.

Council members Tom Moore, Larry Ritchie and Doug Jones all agreed with town attorney Vern Landis that the housing ordinance needed to be changed. There have been many homes in the town that have been run down and left off the tax roll in recent years.

“Absent of changing the ordinance we have no recourse,” Moore said.

“The town needs to find a building inspector to be the building commissioner and then make the town council the hearing party that can accept or deny the inspector’s recommendations,” Landis said.

The council accepted the opportunity to change the wording of the ordinance and gave Landis the go ahead to work on the new wording for the next meeting.

Leesburg Town Clerk Jan Carter gave her end-of-year report on what is left in the town bank accounts.

In the town bank account, there is $176,913.98; the sewer account has $256,636.11; and in savings the town has $190,882.89.

Carter also informed the council that the $76,000 payment to the USDA for the sewer system has been made.

Street Commissioner Brandon Queen informed the board that G&G Hauling delivered 24 tons of salt and sand mix.

“The way this winter is going this will get us through the rest of the winter,” Queen said.

Queen also filled the diesel generator at the lift station.

Derek Tenney reported that Environmental One started working on the broken sewer pump switches last week and would finish the job today.

“They were scheduled to be here in March, but the job they were going to do before us was not ready yet,” Tenney said.

Tenney informed the council that there have been no new problems and that he has nine ready pumps in reserve and one being fixed.

The Leesburg Town Council wants to remind the community that there is no parking on the street between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m. Violators will be towed.

The next meeting will be March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Leesburg Town Hall.
