Lake City Skiers Host Competition Saturday

Posted
Lake City Skiers Saturday will host the first of three competitions this summer.

The City of Lakes Festival water ski competition starts at 8 a.m. Saturday on Hidden Lake with individual competition. Individual competition will include swivel, doubles and jump.

Team competition begins a half hour following completion of individuals. The Lake City Skiers will perform first. The other three competing teams traveling from other states include the Chippewa Lake Water Ski Show Team, Grand City Show Skiers and Silver Lake Ski Club.Awards will be presented about an hour after the final team performs. Erika Rainwater, advertising and promotions chair for LCS, said the day should be concluded by about 4 p.m.

This is the seventh year for the City of Lakes Festival ski show competition.

Concessions will be available during Saturday's competition.

Lake City Skiers took first place in the competition last year.

The Warsaw-based team also will host regional and Division 2 nationals this year. Regionals are July 9-10, and nationals are Aug. 7-8.

"It's going to be booked both weeekends, especially the August weekend," Rainwater said.

The show theme this year for the Lake City Skiers is "Base Venture: Ski Detective". Based on the "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" movies, Rainwater said the skiiers in the show are hunting for the "skis of destiny" throughout the one-hour performance. A couple in a home across the lake try to get rid of the skiiers, only to be converted to being ski-lovers at the end.

As for a trick highlight, Rainwater said new this year is "The Backbreaker". As far as the Lake City Skiers know, they are the only team performing the trick. During it, one skiier is barefooting with a strap attached to them, pulling a jumper behind them.

There are 40 skiers on the team this year, and they are still doing a three-boat show. The show director for 2010 is Keaton Patrick, with Mike Wilson as the show's announcer.

The Lake City Skiers' regular performances are at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Sundays on Hidden Lake. This is the team's 21st season.

Rainwater said sponsors have been very supportive of the team this year despite the economy.

"The Lake City Skiers would like to thank Clark's Marine & Evinrude outboard motors, the official sponsor of the LCS team," said Rainwater.

"Come out and support the Lake City Skiers and their new theme of 'Base Ventura: Ski Detective - Skis of Destiny'," Rainwater said.

All events are free.

Rainwater said the LCS team is always looking for new members. If interested, see any of the skiiers at a show.
