Lady Warriors In Control Throughout Victory Over WhitkoSOUTH WHITLEY – Wawasee defeated Whitko 58-12 Tuesday night, resulting in the largest margin of victory for the Warrior girls basketball team this season.

Led by sophomore Emily Haines, Wawasee found their shooting touch early. Haines, responsible for a career-high 19 points on the night, helped her teammates end a five-game slide by holding Whitko to just six points per half.

“Emily Haines rediscovered her shooting touch from three-point range, and that helped a lot,” said head coach Matt Carpenter. She finished the night with eight rebounds and two steals.

“It was the defensive intensity that helped us,” continued Carpenter. “When we can get stops and set up in a half-court defense, we can be pretty tough. Being able to translate defensive stops into fast break points definitely helped us.”

Eight Wawasee athletes scored on the night, most notably sophomore Jada Carter with twelve points. Juniors Danielle Jenkins and Ella Beezley both finished with eight points.

Despite the offensive firepower, the Wildcats defense held firm in the second quarter.

“We were a little sloppy in the second quarter with the shot selection,” said Carpenter. “Then we were more under control. All in all, I’m happy with all of them.”

Freshman Kirsten Schipper recorded a team-high six points for Whitko, though the Wildcats struggled to assert themselves into the evening’s affairs.

The Warriors record jumps to 7-13 after Tuesday’s result, while Whitko is searching for their first win since the 39-32 victory over Lakeland Christian Academy on Nov. 9.

Wawasee is seeking their first conference win of the season Saturday, as they face Plymouth (10-8, 2-3) in the home conference finale.

“They’re extremely tough to defend, because they’ve got a nice post presence inside and three-point shooters.” said Carpenter, referencing Plymouth’s offense. “We need to be able to stop dribble penetration. That helps us in all the other areas.”
