David Kolbe was elected chairman of the Kosciusko County Democratic Party Saturday. Also was elected was Lindsay Malloy as secretary. The election was at Richard’s Restaurant. Kolbe replaces John Bonitati and Malloy replaces Jeanne Scott. Bonitati thanked the party for the opportunity to serve. Kolbe spoke about why he wanted to be chair. He addressed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that Gov. Mike Pence approved. “I’m really proud to be a democrat. I think we held a consistent and appropriate position over the last week as we observed one of the most incredible, colossal, political and social blunders in our state and hopefully we can correct this,” Kolbe said. He said for the Democratic Party to be successful it needs to attract more people who are in the center. “A lot of people are working poor getting $10 to $11 an hour, having to hold two jobs, and that’s not an acceptable economic format with all of the wealth shifting up,” Kolbe said. “We need to create an environment where businesses are encouraged to pay more to our citizens because it’s in their best interest to have consumers.” Kolbe said it’s in the best interest of the community to avoid divisive social issues. “Let’s think before we jump into a fiasco like we saw this last week,” Kolbe said. He said he sees the need to increase participation in the Democratic Party such as attracting young people, the elderly, independents, veterans and Hispanics.
