KLAS Hosts 'Our Lakes And Rivers' Field DayKosciusko Lakes and Streams held a field day for several classes of elementary school children at Lucerne Park in Warsaw Thursday. The program titled “Our Lakes (and rivers!) are Treasures” was put on to get across four big ideas: – We treasure lakes (and rivers!) because we all need the services they provide. – We treasure lakes (and rivers!) because of their social, recreational and cultural importance. – We treasure lakes (and rivers!) because they inspire creativity in us. – Because we treasure lakes (and rivers!) we monitor their health so that we can protect them. “They’re loving it,” said Milford chaperone Rich Rhodes. “They’re learning about how the watershed works, how not to pollute. It’s a great program.” “They’ve learned quite a bit today,” said Milford fourth grade teacher Carrie Johnson. “The fishing experience was great because a lot of our kids have never even held a fishing pole.” Besides students from Milford, there were also students from Jefferson Elementary and Warsaw Christian on hand. Teams of Grace College students were on hand to serve as volunteers as kids went through different learning stations. While many of the children learned valuable lessons about the importance of natural resources, it also helps fulfill a state-mandated requirement for all fourth graders to learn about Indiana’s natural history. KLAS also gears another field day program toward high school students. KLAS has been putting on these sorts of field days since October 2008.
