Kosciusko Leadership Academy cadets gathered in the historic old courtroom at the Kosciusko County Courthouse on Tuesday, Sept. 22 for a session focused on law enforcement and the judicial system in Kosciusko County.
Cadets heard from Kosciusko Superior Court I Judge Karin McGrath, Warsaw Police Department Capt. Bradley Kellar, Kosciusko County Sheriff Jim Smith and Casey Trombley, director of the Kosciusko County Jail Chemical Addiction Program (JCAP).
The speakers offered cadets a closer look at the roles of the courts, local law enforcement and the county jail. Their remarks highlighted the responsibilities and challenges associated with protecting the community, administering justice and supporting individuals working toward recovery and successful reentry.
McGrath provided insight into the judicial system and the responsibilities of the courts. Kellar and Smith shared perspectives from municipal and county law enforcement, including how their agencies serve the public and work together to address community needs.
Trombley discussed JCAP and its work with incarcerated individuals experiencing substance use challenges. The voluntary program provides participants with recovery-focused education, life skills and resources designed to help them prepare for a more successful future.
Following the presentations, cadets toured the Justice Building, including the 911 Dispatch Center and the jail intake control room. The tour gave cadets a firsthand look at the facilities and operations that support emergency response, public safety and the county’s judicial system.
The session gave cadets a broader understanding of the individuals, agencies and programs that work together throughout Kosciusko County’s judicial and public safety systems.
The Kosciusko Leadership Academy is now in its 44th year of service to the county. As an independent 501(c)(3) organization, KLA conducts biweekly morning sessions across Kosciusko County, exposing emerging leaders to a wide variety of local topics and experts. The program’s annual white paper projects have provided meaningful benefits to citizens and communities throughout the county.
