WINONA LAKE - Kids Market Inc. held its ninth sale in September and donated $7,330 to local charities.
Kids Market Coordinator Gretchen Smoker said the sale was the largest her organization has had, with 300 contributors and a building filled to capacity. During the two-day event, 15,000 items were sold."It was wonderful to see how many women and children were helped through this effort," Smoker said.
Along with the monetary donation, Kids Market was able to donate 47 boxes of items to area charities for distribution and Kids Market shopping vouchers to women and families in need. Kids Market benefits Heartline, Beaman Home, Project Independence, BABE and area MOPS groups.
Kids Market was started in 2000 by two mothers who came up with the idea of a one-stop consignment sale where parents could find good deals on clothes for their kids and people in the community could bring their children's items to sell. Since then, Kids Market has grown into a not-for-profit organization holding two annual sales aimed at helping women and children in the county.
Kids Market is a consignment sale featuring infant, children's and maternity items at yard sale prices. Area families contribute items and recieve 60 percent of the selling price for each item they sell at the sale. The remaining 40 percent is used by Kids Market to pay for rental of the building, supplies and marketing for the sale. The money Kids Market has left over after paying for the sale's expenses is donated to charity.
"We couldn't do this without the support of our community," said Smoker.
The next Kids Market sale will be March 14, 2009. For more information, visit www.kidsmarketinc.com
