Kelly Park Courts To Receive Renovations

Tennis courts at Kelly Park, Fawley Street, Warsaw, will receive needed renovations.

Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved a $25,927.50 contract between the Warsaw Park Department and NiBlock Excavating & Asphalt, Columbia City. The company will lay new asphalt on the park's two tennis courts.

"There are a lot of dips and crevices on the tennis courts that need to be fixed," according to Park Superintendent Jon Garber.

He said the last time the tennis courts were re-asphalted was 15 to 20 years ago, when the direction of the courts was moved to face north and south to prevent sun from getting in players' eyes.

Garber said, during Friday's meeting, he received a quote from K & M Asphalt Sealing Maintenance Inc., Ossian, Friday morning for re-sealing and striping of the tennis courts for $7,800.

Quotes also were received for the company to install new tennis court posts and nets for $1,800.

Garber said the total cost of the project should cost less than $52,000. Funds for the project were included in the park department's 2008 cumulative capital improvement project fund.

Garber said he hopes the project will begin soon so tennis players will have the opportunity to use the court this summer.

The board will need to approve a contractor for the striping and post and net installations, Garber said.

The board also approved a request from the Warsaw Building and Planning Department to accept a grant from the Kosciusko 21st Century Foundation Inc. for the Lake City Greenway project. The foundation has approved the grant extension through April 30, 2009.

The original grant was awarded in September 2006 for $147,974 to pay for the increased and unforeseen additional costs for the Chinworth Bridge Trail.

Warsaw Community Development Coordinator Gisele Cox said the planning department is waiting for the state to close the project and issue a final invoice to use grant monies.

In other business, the board approved a $3,500 contract between Warsaw Community Development Corp. and Warsaw for the annual Warsaw-Winona Lake fireworks show.

The show will be July 4, and Mad Bomber Fireworks Company, Kingsbury, will again present the fireworks.

The Masterworks Pops concert preceding the fireworks will include John Philip Sousa marches, Handel's Royal Fireworks Music, Copeland's "Billy the Kid," John Williams' "Indiana Jones," Broadway songs and a medley of Armed Forces music.
