K21 Helps Fund Tennis Court Renovations

AKRON - Tippecanoe Valley's tennis court project was completed in time to host the final boys home tennis match Sept. 21.

Since then, many students and community members have made use of the courts.

The Kosciusko 21st Century Foundation helped fund part of the cost of the project.

K21 notified Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. in early July that its proposal for a grant to assist in the construction of the tennis courts was approved. For the project, Valley received a check for $50,000 this week.

Bids for the project were taken in April. The project started in late June with the removal of the existing eight tennis courts constructed during the 1970s. Work on the project also included earthwork, drainage, installation of lighting, pouring of concrete sidewalk and installation of 10-foot-high fencing, according to information provided by Valley Assistant Superintendent Brett Boggs.

The only aspect of the project left to be completed is the seeding of the grass in the areas north, east and west of the tennis courts, which will be completed in the spring.

Total cost for site construction, including fencing and lighting, was $340,610.

Valley permits the public full access to its tennis courts after school hours and during weekends. There are no other lighted tennis courts within the Valley School Corp. the public may use during evening hours.

Four of the new tennis courts are fully illuminated. The lights are manually activated for one-hour playing sessions. A few minutes before the hour expires, a warning buzzer sounds to notify the players time is about to expire, letting them reset the lights for an additional hour of play.

K21 is dedicated to maintaining an endowment to ensure health care facilities remain in Kosciusko County, and is committed to improving community health and wellness through investments and grants.

The Valley tennis court project supports the mission of the Foundation by providing a facility that promotes the health and wellness of many county residents.

The information provided by Boggs states, "The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation would like to thank the Kosciusko 21st Century Foundation Inc. for its generous support of the Tippecanoe Valley tennis courts project. With the newly constructed facility now in place, significant health- and wellness-related opportunities will be provided for the students and patrons of the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation."
