K21 Health Foundation has provided the city with a $46,000 grant that will be used to add a sidewalk and bike lanes for bicyclists and pedestrians in Warsaw. Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved the grant that will allow the city to add bicycle and pedestrian facilities on West Center Street, Helper Drive and Zimmer Lane. The funds will be used to further connect the Lake City Greenway by assisting in the construction of bicycle and pedestrian sidewalks to connect Market Street to the Chinworth Trail. These funds will be used in conjunction with the existing street resurfacing project that has been taking place over the course of the summer. The funding will allow the city to add 1.1 miles of new sidewalks and bike lanes. The facilities will stretch from the Hand Avenue crossing along West Center Street, Hepler Drive and Zimmer Lane. The facilities will connect to the east end of the Chinworth Trail greenway. Trail signs and crosswalks also will be added as part of the project. Staci Young, Ride and Walk Advisory Committee chair, said the donation is a significant opportunity for the Ride and Walk Warsaw and Winona Lake development, as West Center Street is a significant part of the backbone across the city that the city’s master plan called for. The goal is to eventually connect the Chinworth Trail to Krebs Trailhead Park and Winona Lake’s Heritage Trail greenway. The addition of these facilities also will create the longest continuous stretch of bicycle and pedestrian facilities in Warsaw at a total of 3.4 miles. This is a reimbursement grant. The city has bicycle and pedestrian project funds available to cover the initial payments to contractors and suppliers.
