SYRACUSE - The K21 Foundation awarded the Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation a $50,000 grant to build the next section of the Syracuse-Wawasee Trail.

Willis Alt, president of the K21 Foundation, said, "The focus of the K21 Foundation is to improve the health and wellness of a community. This trail will encourage the development of an active healthy lifestyle and provide additional opportunities for outdoor recreation."

One goal of the Syracuse-Wawasee Trail is to encourage an increase in physical activity of area residents by linking neighborhoods, businesses, schools and parks. It is hoped that residents will ride a bike or walk instead of using their car.

George Gilbert, K21 Foundation board member representing the Syracuse community, said, "There is a great need for trails. It is easy to see based on the number of walkers and runners that are out on the street every morning."

Larry Siegel, president of the Syracuse-Wawasee Park Foundation, thanked the K21 Foundation for their support by saying, "We are very thankful to have charitable organizations, such as the K21 Foundation, to assist our ambitious goals of constructing trails around this great community!"

The next section of trail is scheduled for spring construction. For more information about the efforts of the Trail Committee, contact Michael Hixenbaugh at 574-457-3440.
