Jefferson Elementary Receives Healthy Hoosier School Award

Posted
Jefferson Elementary received the Silver Level Healthy Hoosier School Award.

The Healthy Hoosier School Award was developed by the Indiana Action for Healthy Kids Team. Indiana schools that have policies and educational programs in place to promote proper nutrition and increased physical activity are awarded for their efforts. Schools have the opportunity to receive a gold-, silver- or bronze-level award.

This is the second year that Jefferson has applied for this award. During the 2010-2011 school years, Jefferson received the bronze award; and during 2011-2012 received silver. The state awarded only six gold, 75 silver and 32 bronze.

To receive this award, Jefferson Elementary needed to prove that proper nutrition and physical activity were top priorities for students and staff.

The school has weekly physical education class where students are taught proper ways to exercise and lifelong activities.
Also, during class discussions take place about nutrition and proper diet.  The physical education teacher and one of the food service directors provided an opportunity for students to taste different fruits and vegetables.

For several years the school has had a fundraiser that promotes physical fitness instead of selling candy. Jefferson’s staff also promotes fitness by participating with students during this fundraiser and during their own time to set a good example for students.
