WINONA LAKE - Inspections of rental housing units may depend on whether the town needs to hire additional staff, the town council said Tuesday.
Deciding what kind of rental units should get priority and whether Dick Leaf, the town's building inspector, should have help with the inspections will be discussed at December's town council meeting.
The council also will discuss in December establishing a TIF (tax increment financing) district in Winona Lake.
With a TIF district, any new taxes raised would go into a separate account that would be spent on improvements in the TIF area or things related to that area.
The council also:
4 Passed a motion to keep the tax rate at the 1996 rate of $2.7284.
4 Agreed to establish a new rental policy for the park's community building. The policy would ban smoking, alcoholic beverages and controlled substances from the building; would set a time limit of 11 p.m. for rentals; would require opening and closing by a third party; and would set a higher deposit.
4 Passed resolutions authorizing Christmas bonuses for town employees, setting employee wages for 1997, buying a military truck from the City of Warsaw for $1, and authorizing Marshal Malcolm Gilbert to order a new police car from the 1997 budget.
Public works superintendent Kim Endicott said the trash pickup schedule for Christmas week was changed. The Tuesday route will be picked up on Monday, Dec. 23, and the Wednesday route will be picked up on Thursday, Dec. 26.
The town council will meet next at 6 p.m. on Dec. 9.
