A Nappanee man has died from injuries he received Saturday night after crashing a mo-ped near Etna Green.
Jimmy W. Coates, 47, 406 E. Market Street, Nappanee, died early Monday afternoon. The Allen County Coroner's Office said Coates died from extensive head injuries from the crash.
Kosciusko County Sheriff's deputies and emergency personnel responded to a report of a mo-ped crash on County Road 800 West just north of County Road 300 North near Etna Green Saturday night at approximately 8:46 p.m. Officers and rescue units located a single mo-ped lying in the northbound portion of the roadway along with the driver.
Coates was airlifted from the scene by the Parkview Samaritan helicopter and taken to Fort Wayne Parkview Regional Medical Center in very critical condition.
Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigators stated that Coates appeared to have been northbound on CR 800 West approximately 1000 feet north of CR 300 North when, for an unknown reason, he lost control of the mo-ped that he was driving and crashed in the roadway. Coates was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
FACT team members stated that the crash is still under investigation pending legal blood draw results as required by state law.
