Independent Candidates File For Mayor, Council Seats

Three independent candidates have filed for candidacy for the Nov. 6 election.

Candidates in Warsaw, Winona Lake and Syracuse had until noon Monday to get the proper amount of signatures for their district.

No candidates filed for the Winona Lake and Syracuse offices.

Jerry Opperud, of 116 S. Buffalo St., filed for Warsaw mayor Monday.

Current Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Republican, has served as mayor since 1997. He ran unopposed in the May 8 primary.

Opperud ran against Wiggins in the 2003 election. Wiggins received 67.41 percent of the votes, and Opperud received 32.59 percent of the votes.

James Breading, of 420 W. Kincaide St., filed June 27 for the city district 3 seat. Breading said he also applied for the district 3 seat seven years ago.

Current city councilman Republican George Clemens received the most votes in the May primary for district 3. Clemens was first elected to the city council in 2000.

Cindy Dobbins, of 116 S. Buffalo St., filed for the district 4 seat. Current city councilman Republican Jerry Patterson was unopposed in the May primary running for the district four seat.

No Democrats have filed for the general election.
