Ind. 15 Widening Near Leesburg to Wrap Up by Weekend

LEESBURG – The Ind. 15 widening project that has crippled the town of Leesburg will be completed by week’s end, the town’s street commissioner reported to the town board Monday evening.

During the town council meeting Monday inside town hall, Street Commissioner Brandon Queen reported to the board that the Ind. 15 widening project, which included the Indiana Department of Transportation installing a middle turn lane on Ind. 15 from traffic into Leesburg, should finally be wrapped up and open for traffic by the weekend. The project grew from a proposed 20 days to two months. Its completion is much welcomed by the town, the board said.

Perhaps equally as welcomed, the board announced that at the November council meeting, an amendment to the town’s sewer ordinance will be announced.

In last month’s meeting, the board voted to clarify language in a current town ordinance concerning multiple structures on a residential property feeding into the sewer, after board president Tom Moore aired a concern saying a drive through town shows roughly 50 percent of central Leesburg properties have an outbuilding on the property. Moore said language needs to be written in case a business that draws from the sewer is established in those outbuildings.

The board then asked town attorney Vern Landis to draft language suggesting the town not “double dip” on residents with multiple sewer feeds. The new ordinance also will say that a business on a property will be termed as a business if it hits eight employees, at which point it will be classified as a commercial property for sewer purposes.

Landis had said that language would be available by Monday’s meeting. The board reported it would be available during the next meeting, however.

In other business Monday, the board set its Halloween trick-or-treat hours. Leesburg official trick-or-treat hours will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

The board issued word that any problems with grinder pumps or sewage pumps should be directed through the phone number on the yellow tag on the pumps. That number is 574-453-4591.

Queen told town residents that leaf pickup has begun. Residents should rake leaves to the front curb, and remove all debris.

The town received word that the refurbishment of the town holiday decorations, which the board approved last month, has been completed.

The next board meeting is Nov. 8.
