Dr. David Jeremiah tells the story of a shepherd in Texas who had a large flock of sheep he was tending on a cold evening.
He had built a fire and the sheep had settled down for the night circled around it. Suddenly the howling of coyotes could be heard in the distance and the flock began to stir. The sheepherder began stoking the fire to produce more light as he sent his dogs out to help guard the herd.
He turned around and was met with the sight of hundreds of sets of eyes glowing in the dark as they fixed their sight on the blaze that calmed them to rest. The coyotes never came close fearing exposure in the light.
Hebrews 12:2 says, “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
In these times of growing darkness we need to look to Jesus, the light of the World. Like those sheep in this story we don’t peer into the darkness, instead focusing on the light and the safety of the shepherd. Our hope doesn’t come from this world but from the One who endured the cross and shed His blood for our sins, calling us to repentance and proclaiming Jesus as Lord. Then like that flock, as His followers, our lives reflect that light to others of the one who was raised from the dead and is the only way to forgiveness, safety and Heaven!
