Illinois Double Murder Suspect Captured South Of MentoneMENTONE - An Illinois man is awaiting extradition in Kosciusko County Jail following his arrest Sunday night in connection with a double murder.
Brian Lee Garrett, 27, Wateska, Ill., was taken into custody by Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department officers Chris McKeand and Matt Rapp at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in a wooded area just outside of Mentone.
KCSD obtained information that Garrett was dropped off in a wooded area east of CR 500S by Tricia Hall, 24, Sheldon, Ill.
Hall informed officers of Garrett's location, then took them to the spot where she dropped Garrett off, and a perimeter was set up.Garrett was wanted in connection with the murders of Robert Wood, 48, and Ralph Elsey, 61, both of Sheldon, Ill.
Garrett lived with the two men until recently when he was asked to leave.
Iroquois County Sheriff's Department in Wateska, Ill., told area police that Garrett allegedly went to the residence Friday and stabbed Wood several times in the the chest on the front porch of the residence. He then allegedly entered the house and stabbed Elsey several times in front of Hall.
Garrett attempted to load the body of Wood into the trunk of his vehicle but eventually dragged him underneath a nearby tree. Garrett then took Hall with him and traveled to Remington, where the two stayed until Sunday.
On Sunday they headed to Warsaw, where Garrett's grandmother lives. When he was unable to contact his grandmother, Garrett told Hall he wanted to camp out in a wooded area south of Mentone.
Canine units from Warsaw, Winona Lake and Indiana State Police were on scene, and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department converged into the wooded area along with a helicopter from the Indiana State Police.
Garrett is currently being held in the Kosciusko County Jail awaiting extradition to Illinois. Iroquois County Sheriff's Department advised there is a warrant and $1 million bond issued from their county for his arrest on two first-degree murder charges.
Claypool and Mentone police also assisted at the scene.
