ATWOOD – The Huntington woman injured Friday in an accident near Atwood is on life support as of Monday morning. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Chad Hill said Monday morning that Latanna Thompson, 61, Huntington, is in “very critical” condition and on life support. She was one of two Huntington residents on a mo-ped Friday night when they were struck by a semi-tractor trailer near Atwood. At approximately 8:55 p.m. Friday, KCSD deputies and emergency personnel responded to a vehicular accident with personal injuries on Old 30, near the intersection of CR 520W, Warsaw, according to a press release Saturday from the KCSD. Officers arrived and found a mo-ped, along with its driver and passenger who were suffering from multiple injuries after being struck by a semi-tractor/trailer. The driver of the mo-ped, identified as Dustin A. Thompson, 31, Huntington, said he was travelling westbound on Old 30 when he was struck from behind by a semi-tractor trailer. The collision pushed the mo-ped off the roadway. Hill said Dustin Thompson was treated and released. Thompson’s passenger, Latanna Thompson, had severe head injuries and was airlifted from the scene by Parkview Samaritan helicopter and transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team members stated that a preliminarily investigation into the crash determined that a semi-tractor trailer, driven by Daniel S. Faris, 61, Rochester, had been westbound on Old 30 approaching the intersection of CR 520W. Faris said he did not see the mo-ped that was also westbound in front of him due to bright sunshine obscuring his visibility. Faris was not injured in the crash, according to the KCSD press release. Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was assisted at the scene by members of the Atwood Fire Department, Mentone EMS, Tri-County Ambulance and the KCSD.
