WINONA LAKE – Hundreds of people were splattered with paint as they ran and walked Saturday in Winona Lake to raise funds for pediatric rehabilitation services. Proceeds from the first annual “Kolors For Jacob’s Kids Splatter Powder Paint Run” went to Jacob’s Ladder, a not-for-profit provider of pediatric rehabilitation services. The event raised $14,910, and had 487 participants and 50 volunteers. The run was a Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy fundraising project developed by Sarah Boyle and Rachel Jungbauer, both juniors at Warsaw Community High School. The event featured a 5K run and walk and one-mile run and walk. At every kilometer, participants got splattered with powdered paint. The paint was a mixture of corn starch, water and powdered paint. Jungbauer said she hopes the event brought awareness to Jacob’s Ladder. Boyle said she hopes participants had fun while benefiting Jacob’s Ladder. For the KYLA project, Jungbauer and Boyle obtained sponsors by sending out letters. Funds also were raised through entry forms. Participants could purchase shirts as well. Four WCHS cross country and track teammates, Emma Hayward, Tayler Mylin, Emily Stouder and Hannah Dawson, were some of the many people who participated in the event. Stouder said she enjoyed participating in the run. “It was a shock at first when the paint got thrown on you, and I was afraid it would get in my teeth and I’d smile at my friends with paint in my teeth,” Stouder said. Dawson said the environment made the race enjoyable. “The atmosphere was vibrant and exciting and you knew there were other runners who liked to have fun just like we do,” Dawson said.
